ExxonMobil Receives Second Certification for WEC Performance by DNV-GL

Certification confirms that Mobil SHC™ Gear 320 WT is proven to not contribute to the oil-related effects of white etching cracks (WEC)

  • ExxonMobil is currently the only wind turbine lubricant supplier with second stage certification mark for WEC performance
  • 60 per cent of wind turbine gearbox failures are attributed to WEC
  • Mobil SHC™ Gear 320 WT can help to minimise wind turbine downtime and extend equipment life

Brussels, Belgium – ExxonMobil’s high performance wind turbine gear oil, Mobil SHC™ Gear 320 WT, has received a second ‘design evaluation’ certification by DNV-GL, one of the world’s leading certification bodies for renewable energy projects.

The certification is in recognition of the lubricant’s in-service performance, which is proven to not contribute to the oil-related effects of white etching cracks (WEC).

With 60 per cent of wind turbine gearbox failures attributed to WEC, it is a serious issue for wind turbine operators that can result in costly maintenance and lost productivity.

ExxonMobil worked side-by-side with DNV-GL during the accreditation process to ensure that Mobil SHC Gear 320 WT provides wind turbine operators with the best possible in-service performance, even in extreme conditions. The certificate was presented to ExxonMobil at an awards ceremony held [date] at [location].

“We are proud that our leading wind turbine gear oil – used in wind turbines worldwide - is proven not to contribute to WEC “ says Thorsten Sueling, Europe EB/OEM Manager at ExxonMobil. “This milestone is a testament to the ongoing research and work we do with customers and OEMs”

Mobil SHC™ Gear 320 WT gear oil is a high performance lubricant designed specifically for wind turbines. It offers protection for gearboxes operating under harsh conditions, such as extremely low or high temperatures and corrosive environments, minimising downtime and maintenance and extending equipment life. Due to the outstanding quality of the gearbox oil, customers are also offered a 10 year warranty(*).

The gear oil meets the requirements of the GESAMP 64 test, which certifies that the lubricant is non-hazardous in water environments. This is especially important for operators of off-shore wind farms. It has also achieved approvals from all major OEMs, for both wind turbines and gearboxes.
