Jenbacher N Oil 40 decreases maintenance time
More than doubled the oil drain interval
x2Situation
A German city district heating company operates four Jenbacher J416 engines, two of which are of generation C. One of the Jenbacher J416 natural gas engines was filled with a high-performance gas engine oil that was changed every 1,400-1,500 hours, based on the condemning limits of Total Base Number (TBN) and oxidation. The customer wanted to extend these oil drain intervals to reduce operating costs.
Recommendation
To extend the oil drain intervals (ODI), ExxonMobil and INNIO Jenbacher engineers recommended to test Jenbacher N Oil 40, a new high-performance gas engine oil, specifically engineered for Jenbacher engines running on natural gas.
Jenbacher N Oil 40 was jointly developed by INNIO Jenbacher and ExxonMobil engineers in order to help improve engine cleanliness and offer good protection against valve recession.
Long-term monitoring in more than 100 units confirmed that Jenbacher N Oil 40 doubles the extended oil and filter life and reduced lifecycle costs (LCC) by up to 30% compared to other typical approved gas engine oils*.
Based on its excellent performance levels, INNIO Jenbacher defined new, used oil limits for this product which enables working with longer oil drain intervals.
Benefits
A comparative test conducted on one of the two generation C engines revealed that, with support of Mobil services used oil analysis, the oil drain intervals could be extended from 1,400-1,500 hours to over 3,300-3,600 hours without compromising the protection of critical engine components.
After the test, the enhanced oxidation performance and excellent Total Base Number (TBN) retention provided the following benefits:
- Oil drain interval more than doubled
- Decreased maintenance time and manual interventions
- Increased engine uptime with improved site revenue
- Reduced waste oil
