Jenbacher N Oil 40 increases engine uptime
More than doubled the oil drain interval
x2Situation
A greenhouse facility in the United Kingdom use their Jenbacher gas engines, equipped with an exhaust gas catalytic converter, for electricity production. The heat and exhaust gases are used to promote plant growth. The company operates their engines with an energy efficiency of ~95% and was looking for a reduction of lifecycle costs (LCC) for their four Jenbacher J616 engines. The operator contacted ExxonMobil to help meet their business objectives to optimise maintenance schedules by extending oil drain intervals.
Recommendation
Following a site visit, ExxonMobil and INNIO Jenbacher engineers proposed to test
Jenbacher N Oil 40 to enhance engine cleanliness and extend the oil and filter life.
Jenbacher N Oil 40, a new high-performance gas engine oil, was jointly developed by INNIO Jenbacher and ExxonMobil engineers. Due to its unique formulation, Jenbacher N Oil 40 keeps the engine oil and spare parts cleaner, offers excellent resistance to valve recession, and demonstrates improved resistance to ring sticking.
Long-term monitoring in more than 100 units confirmed that Jenbacher N Oil 40 helps reduce lifecycle costs (LCC) by up to 30% compared to other typical approved gas engine oils*.
Benefits
A trial conducted on one of the four engines revealed that, supported with Mobil services used oil analysis, the oil drain intervals could be extended from 1,500 hours to over 3,500 hours without any detrimental effects on the engine.
After the trial, the greenhouse facility observed the following benefits:
- Longer oil drain interval (ODI) more than doubled reducing the number of annual oil changes from 18 to 8
- Longer filter life
- Decreased maintenance time and manual interventions
- Increased engine uptime with improved site revenue
- Less waste oil
The company decided to switch all the Jenbacher natural gas engines to Jenbacher N Oil 40.
