Mobil Centaur™ XHP 461 grease helps a steel mill reduce grease consumption by 40%
Reduced grease consumption by
40%Situation
A Finnish steel mill has lubricated its continuous casting machine bearings with a competitor’s conventional grease using a centralized grease distribution system. The customer experienced bearing failures and grease buildup on the equipment and nearby floors due to the over-greasing, creating a housekeeping challenge and potential slip hazard.
Recommendation
In order to reduce bearing failures and grease consumption, ExxonMobil recommended Mobil Centaur™ XHP 461 grease with calcium sulfonate thickener and optimal regreasing instructions. Mobil Centaur™ XHP 461 grease provides a balanced combination of water washout and water spray-off resistance, as well as excellent corrosion protection, in severely wet environments.
After converting to Mobil Centaur™ XHP 461 grease, no bearing failures were detected and grease consumption decreased by 40%. The customer also benefited from reduced grease leakage around the casting machine.
Result
After converting to Mobil Centaur™ XHP 461 grease, no bearing failures were detected and grease consumption decreased by 40%. The customer also benefited from reduced grease leakage around the casting machine.
Safety
By avoiding grease leakages on the floor, customer has decreased the risk of maintenance personnel slipping around the continuous casting machines.
Environmental Care
Reduction of leaking grease and maintenance supplies has helped decrease oil waste generated for disposal.†
