Lorry driving along a road – Mobil Delvac

Enabling fuel savings

Fuel represents a large proportion of commercial vehicles’ operating costs. Mobil Delvac™ engine oils have the potential to offer fuel economy advantages versus conventional mineral lubricants.

Testing Mobil Delvac

ExxonMobil understands getting to net-zero will be an enormous challenge. We also understand the unique and important contributions we can make, and we are embracing those new opportunities. Commercial vehicle operators are looking to stay competitive while addressing these challenges and emerging regulations.

With that in mind, ExxonMobil was keen to understand the fuel economy potential of its lubricants and the wider environmental benefits they might offer.

Therefore, they put their heavy-duty diesel engine oils through their paces at UTAC – a globally recognised automotive testing and validation organisation.

The lubricants put to the test were Mobil Delvac Modern 5W-30 Extreme Protection and Mobil Delvac Ultra 5W-30 Ultimate Protection V2.

Fuel efficient lubricants

Commercial vehicles product performance advisor, Luka Jazbec, highlights several key technical features of fuel-efficient lubricants and the benefits they offer.

Mobil Delvac lubricants have the potential* to enhance fuel economy and help lower emissions. This is particularly valuable to fleet operators who are under pressure to reduce operating costs while also meeting emission standards.

Improve fuel economy and lower emissions

The test was designed to not only ascertain fuel economy potential to reduce fuel costs, but also how these lubricants can help lower emissions such as CO2, when compared to a standard 15W-40 commercial vehicle engine oil.

There is a direct link between reducing fuel consumption and emissions such as carbon dioxide.

  • Mobil Delvac Ultra 5W-30 Ultimate Protection V2 pack shot with 1.8% sticker

Mobil Delvac Ultra 5W-30 Ultimate Protection V2

realised up to 1.8% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

  • Mobil Delvac Modern 5W-30 Extreme Protection pack shot with 1.3% sticker

Mobil Delvac Modern 5W-30 Extreme Protection

achieved up to 1.3% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

*UTAC carried out fuel economy tests on behalf of ExxonMobil on a Euro 6 Mercedes Actros 420 Streamspace HGV (with an OM471 engine) at a 75% payload. The vehicle undertook a series of fuel economy tests on the World Harmonized Vehicle Cycle (WHVC) chassis dynamometer at UTAC.

Market available 15W-40 conventional mineral oil was used as the reference oil in the engine, and when changed for Mobil Delvac Modern 5W-30 Extreme Protection a 1.3% fuel saving was achieved during the highway cycle and when Mobil Delvac Ultra 5W-30 Ultimate Protection V2 was used a 1.8% saving was achieved during the semi-urban cycle when compared to the reference oil.
